Happy June! Is your pet overweight?
June is weight awareness month!
Did you know that being just a few pounds overweight can have a significant impact on your pet’s health?
Just like people, dogs and cats that carry extra weight are at increased risk for serious health problems, including:
• Arthritis and joint pain
• Diabetes
• Heart and respiratory disease
• High blood pressure
• Reduced mobility and energy levels
• Increased risk during anesthesia and surgery
• Shorter lifespan
Many pet owners don’t realize their pet is overweight because weight gain often happens gradually. A few things your can do to help your pet stay at their ideal weight:
• Feed measured portions.
• Avoid too many treats, especially table scraps!
• Get out every day for exercise and play!
• Schedule regular wellness exams and weight checks.
We recommend taking a moment to evaluate your pet’s weight and body condition. If you’re unsure whether your dog or cat is at a healthy weight, swing by the clinic and feel free to weigh your pet anytime. We can always get your pet scheduled with a doctor to discuss the best plan for your pet to keep them healthy and happy!
